Consultations

Dr. Abrams is regarded as one of the top specialists in this area for diagnosing and treating all types of skin conditions. With this in mind, many general and family practice physicians send their patients to Dr. Abrams for a second opinion and treatment of their dermatological needs.

A consultation consists of a review of your medical history, evaluation of the current skin condition that brought you to our office, and may include a biopsy if deemed necessary in order to obtain clinical confirmation of a skin condition. You may also request a complete skin cancer screening at the time of your visit. Upon completion of your examination, you will be informed of your treatment options and provided with a follow-up appointment if necessary.

If your condition does not required further clinical diagnosis, such as a clearly benign lesion that is painful or irritated, you may request to have the lesion completely removed during your consultation.

TOXINS: Botox & Xeomin

Every person’s treatment needs are different, and the therapy you and your doctor choose should reflect that. If you have been previously treated for adult upper limb spasticity, cervical dystonia, or blepharospasm, your doctor will take that into consideration when determining your initial dose of Botox or Xeomin.

Subsequent treatments are individualized by your doctor based on your condition and symptoms. That means the dose for you may not be the same as the dose for another patient with the same diagnosis.

Botox

BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment is a simple, non-surgical procedure that smooth the deep, persistent lines that developed over time. BOTOX® Cosmetic is not magic; it’s medicine and the result of years of careful research and testing. BOTOX® Cosmetic is fast, effortless, and minimally invasive. No downtime or recovery period.

In minutes, we can make a few tiny injections of the BOTOX® Cosmetic protein to relax the muscles causing fine lines and keep them relaxed up to four months. Unlike surgery, BOTOX® Cosmetic is fast, effortless, and minimally invasive with no downtime or recovery period.

BOTOX® Cosmetic, also known as OnabotulinumtoxinA, is a prescription medicine that is injected into muscles and used to improve the look of moderate to severe frown lines. BOTOX® was first introduced in the late 1980’s by ophthalmologists to treat optic muscle disorders. In 2002, BOTOX® was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of moderate to severe frwn lines between the eye brows (glabellar lines). Since then, popularity has soared and is consistently one of the top five nonsurgical cosmetic procedures performed each year. BOTOX® is used to eradicate crow’s feet, frown lines, and furrows in the forehead. BOTOX® is also approved for medical treatment such as severe armpit perspiration and migraine headaches.

Because BOTOX® Cosmetic is a prescription medicine, it must be injected with sterile instruments by a physician in a doctor’s office. A minimal discomfort from the shot may occur but the procedure overall is painless. If you are extremely sensitive, you may ask for some local anesthesia or a numbing cream. The procedure takes anywhere from a few minutes to 20 minutes depending on the extent of the treatment.

Selecting the correct injection points is critical to the success of the procedure. The points are not necessarily at the wrinkle you are hoping to erase but where the muscle contracts. You can resume normal activities immediately but we recommend our patients to avoid the sun.

Xeomin

XEOMIN is delivered by a provider as an intramuscular injection or series of injections. Your doctor will decide how many muscles need to be injected and the dose per muscle, and he or she may adjust that dose over time so that it is right for you. In general, XEOMIN can be used no more frequently than every 12 weeks.1

1-week onset

  • For most people, the effects of XEOMIN are typically seen within 7 days after treatment1

12-week duration

  • Effects of XEOMIN usually last about 12 weeks, but may last significantly longer or shorter in individual patients.1

XEOMIN is the latest neurotoxin for treatment of adults with upper limb spasticity (ULS), cervical dystonia, and blepharospasm.

XEOMIN Is Well Established Worldwide

  • FDA approved in 2010 for use in the United States for cervical dystonia and blepharospasm in adults1
  • FDA approved in 2015 for use in the United States for upper limb spasticity in adults.1

CO2

Fractional CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing is the latest innovation for micro-ablative skin rejuvenation. Using advanced laser technology, a carbon dioxide (CO2) laser for skin resurfacing precisely removes outer layers of damaged skin to reveal the underlying skin which is softer, smoother, and younger looking. The CO2 laser is one of the most commonly used laser skin resurfacing treatment option.

SmartXide DOT is the answer to the growing demand of patients for a less invasive procedure with a shorter recovery time. With the fractionated approach and special scanning system, Deka has succeeded in drastically reducing the recovery time and risks of classic CO2 resurfacing.  By applying the CO2 laser energy in a fractionated manner, very small columns of thermic damage are created as far as the dermis. Tissue around these columns is spared, resulting in a faster recovery process. Thermic damage stimulates new collagen formation.

Fractional CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing is ideal for the treatment of:

  • Pigments
  • Fine lines and superficial wrinkles
  • Skin laxity and texture
  • Acne scars
  • Skin discoloration and brown spots
  • Sun damaged skin

Fractional Laser CO2 Skin Resurfacing is your single-treatment solution for beautiful younger-looking skin. It is a single treatment with minimal patient downtime. During the procedure, a high-energy beam of laser light is used to smooth out lines, wrinkles, and scars, remove brown spots and other irregularities, and tighten the skin. It also stimulates formation of new underlying collagen to continue improvement over time.

With Fractional CO2 Laser Treatment, only a fraction of the skin’s surface is treated by the laser, leaving small “bridges” of untouched skin. This technique makes the healing process much faster and enables you to get back to normal activities sooner.

Think of your skin as a digital photograph in need of high-quality restoration or touch up. Just as a damaged painting is delicately restored one small area at a time, or a photographic image is altered, pixel by pixel, Fractional CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing improves your appearance by affecting only a fraction of your skin at a time with thousands of tiny microscopic laser spots.

There is little to no pain associated with the procedure-most patients say they feel warmth similar to a sunburn. A topical numbing agent may be used prior to the procedure to minimize any discomfort.

As the 10600nm wavelength of the CO2 laser has a much higher absorption in water (100 times) compared to the 1550nm of the Fraxel laser, CO2 is ablative (vaporising) and the fraxel is not. The fractionated effect has allowed the safety profile of the CO2 resurfacing to be successfully increased. Even so, the risks and recovery period are still greater than with the Fraxel.

For indications such as perioral wrinkles, the CO2 laser is still considered the golden standard. The new fractionated approach allows the patient to choose the amount of social downtime they find acceptable in relation to the desired result. A classic approach may provide better results in some cases of serious aging of the skin; however, with the known risks.

Results of treatment are LONG TERM and with proper sun protection and skin care regimen, can last for many years. Most effects of treatment become visible right away, whereas others-such as new collagen formation-build up gradually and results in continued smoothing over time. Therefore, most people continue to show improvement up to 6 months after the procedure.

eMatrix Resurfacing

The E-Matrix™ Sublative Rejuvenation Treatment in now offered at Abrams Dermatology in Sarasota. The eMatrix™ skin rejuvenation treatment from Syneron offers patients a non-invasive, non-laser solution for acne scars, wrinkles, skin laxity, uneven skin tone, and texture irregularities leaving the skin noticeably younger and flawless.

FDA-cleared Sublative Rejuvenation using eMatrix is truly a unique procedure because it’s the first to combine the laser skin resurfacing results you can get with aggressive treatments – with no downtime. The secret to Sublative Rejuvenation is the energy used and how the energy is delivered through the skin.

To achieve the best possible results, the energy, whether laser or light, must be delivered below the skin without overheating the top layer of the skin.  This has been the challenge with other more aggressive laser skin resurfacing treatments because they work by overheating the top layer of the skin to the point of complete ablation (removal), forcing new skin to develop.

The energy used for Sublative Rejuvenation is called fractionated bi-polar radio frequency, which penetrates through the skin–sending more energy beneath the surface of the skin to really maximize collagen production–while keeping the top layer of the skin intact. This is an important factor in why it’s safe for all skin types. Unlike other non-aggressive treatments, Sublative Rejuvenation works from the inside out by stimulating cell regrowth.  The results last longer and can be further enhanced with yearly maintenance treatments.

Post treatment, you may notice increased levels of beneficial collagen as new healthy skin cells are produced. Mild to moderate wrinkles and superficial skin discolorations are reduced, and the texture of your skin becomes smoother and more elastic.

Although classified as an aggressive treatment, Sublative Rejuvenation is unique because it delivers optimal efficiency with minimal downtime at an affordable price point–and it’s safe for ALL skin types and color.  A full-face treatment session takes less than 20 minutes.

Each patient’s treatment protocol will vary based on individual needs and results desired.  Most patients will receive three to four treatments, each spaced four to six weeks apart.

Sublative Rejuvenation with eMatrix is very tolerable.  During treatment, many patients feel a warm, prickly sensation. After treatment, a pink or red “sunburn” appearance and feeling is common.

No clinical side effects have been reported to date.  The beauty about Sublative Rejuvenation is its capability to offer significant fractional “laser skin resurfacing” results to ALL skin types with little to no downtime.

Sublative Rejuvenation is the only fractional treatment that can be used on all skin types.  Some skin conditions (such as eczema) may prohibit patients from receiving the treatment.

Patients will begin to see results after the first treatment and results will continue to improve up to one year post treatment.  Because this treatment works to rebuild collagen, there are no limitations on how long the results last. Maintenance treatments are recommended once a year to maintain and further enhance current results.

Patients can expect a noticeable reduction of fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, stretch marks and other scarring, brown spots, sun damage and fine broken blood vessels. In addition, patients will see an improvement in texture and skin laxity. On average, most results appear over a period of three to six months, but some patients notice results immediately after treatment.

vBeam

The Vbeam® Perfecta is a revolutionary laser designed to treat underlying vasculature and epidermal pigmented lesions without damaging the surface of the skin. It is the most effective laser in treatment of rosacea and facial blood vessels.

The Vbeam® Perfecta sets the gold standard in treatment of facial redness such as rosacea and facial veins. It is highly recommended for unsightly broken capillaries, spider hemangioms, telangectasia and facial skin discoloration.

The Vbeam ® Perfecta laser treatment is a total facial rejuvenation procedure that improves the appearance of the skin without invasive surgery. This treatment does not require anesthetics. It is a safe treatment that eliminates the use of needles and is mostly painless. Some patient reported only warming or tingling sensations. Patients may return to their normal activities without any significant cosmetic inconvenience.

The Vbeam® Perfecta is an affordable solution to remove redness on the face as well as treat rosacea, facial spider veins and other undesirable blood vessels and skin discolorations. The cost for the laser procedure starts at $125 per treatment. The total cost depends on the size of the area and the condition being treated. Results can be seen after the first treatment. Most patients notice beneficial results right away and often times feel a firming or tightening of the treated area. A consultation with Dr. Abrams, D.O. or Sheryl Wilson, ARNP-C, will determine the right treatment for the patient and the number of sessions required for clearance of the area to be treated.

Pulsed Dye Lasers deliver an intense but gentle burst of light into selectively targeted areas of the skin. The light is absorbed by specific blood vessels or melanin pigmented areas in the dermis depending on the condition being treated. Factors such as the age, color and type of lesions, as well as the location on the body, all determine whether lesions can be removed.

The Vbeam® Perfecta laser uses a unique micropulse technology, which spreads out a single laser pulse into 8 evenly spaced micropulses, providing gentle vessel heating and allowing consistent effective results. The compression handpiece pushes vascular fluids out of the way, enabling the laser to precisely target pigmentation without impacting underlying blood vessels, thus offering precision results and greater comfort for patients during treatment.

Your provider will ensure you are as comfortable as possible; most patients are reclined or lying down depending on the area being treated. Both the patient and the provider will be wearing protective eyewear. When treatment begins, the laser will be calibrated and parameters will be set based on the specific condition being treated, each condition and each individual is unique and these settings maximize the results you will see following treatment.

The only requirement is that you have a desire to improve the condition of your skin. Most patients who receive cosmetic laser treatment opt for procedures to correct skin conditions not out of medical necessity, but because they are interested in improving the appearance of their skin without invasive surgery that would cause downtime away from daily activities. From total facial rejuvenation which involves the reduction and removal of red and brown pigmented lesions with a general firming of the skin, to the removal of sun-spot damage, patients should discuss with their practitioner which treatments are right for them.

No anesthetics are required, but they may be used. The feeling most patients report is a warming or tingling sensation during treatment. The skin being treated is additionally protected by Candela’s dynamic cooling method, DCD, which delivers a cooling mist on to the skin before the laser pulse is emitted. This cooling mist increases comfort during treatment, as well as protects the skin to minimize side effects like redness.

Yes. In fact, treatment is so safe that it has been successfully used since the 1980’s for the treatment of port wine stain birthmarks in infants and young children. During treatment, the epidermis is protected by Candela’s exclusive dynamic cooling method, DCD, which sprays a cooling mist onto the targeted area of skin before each laser pulse, maximizing comfort and protecting the skin during treatment. The Candela Vbeam Perfecta sets the standard for technology and safety. Side effects are minimized by splitting each laser pulse into a series of micro pulses for maximum effect and maximum safety. Additionally, the Vbeam uses an intuitive touch screen color display with easy to read graphics and clear treatment guidelines.

Most patients notice beneficial results right away, and often times feel a firming or tightening of the treated area. The results of laser therapy vary depending on the condition that is being treated and the number of treatments required for clearance.

Some patients experience redness or mild swelling in the treated area immediately following treatment, this usually goes away in a few hours. Occasionally purpura, a laser bruise, may occur. Purpura is transient and usually disappears in three to five days.

It is recommended to avoid sun exposure before and throughout treatment to maximize results. A sunblock of SPF 30 or higher should be worn daily during this time. Post treatment care guidelines depend on the condition treated, and should be discussed with you practitioner.

Most insurance companies do not offer reimbursement for cosmetic and aesthetic procedures. Some carriers will, however, cover the treatment of disfiguring birthmarks such as hemangiomas or port wine stains. In addition, the treatment of psoriasis and rosacea may be covered by some insurance companies. Please consult your insurance carrier for more details.

Cost depends on the size of the area being treated as well as the condition being treated, talk with your practitioner to learn more about treatment fees.

Vein Treatments

Sclerotherapy

  • Up to 25% of women and 18% of men will suffer from varicose veins
  • If both parents have varicose veins, your chances to develop the disease are close to 90%
  • If one parent is affected, daughters have a 60% chance while sons have a 25% chance of developing the disease
  • 60% of leg ulcers are due to varicose veins
  • Left untreated, nearly 50% of patients will eventually experience chronic venous insufficiency

Dr. Abrams uses sclerotherapy to safely remove unsightly veins. This is a walk-in, walk-out procedure with no anesthetic required.
Often treating one vein can affect numerous veins, causing an entire network of vessels to be eliminated. The procedure is fast with minimal discomfort and great results. There is no downtime and you can resume normal activity immediately. Multiple treatments are usually necessary to achieve maximal improvement.

Spider veins are small enlarged superficial blood vessels that appear red or blue. They commonly occur on the legs, but frequently occur on the face or elsewhere.

These dilated blood vessels may be short, unconnected lines each about the size of a large hair, or connected in a matted, “sunburst” pattern. They may also look like a spider web or a tree with branches. Sometimes, they occur in a small area and aren’t very noticeable, or they can cover a large area of skin and be quite unattractive.

Larger dilated blood vessels called varicose veins may be raised above the skin surface. They may occur along with spider veins.

Patients can have pain, ranging from a dull throbbing pain to a burning sensation. The larger vessels are more likely to cause discomfort, although smaller blue veins have been shown to cause pain.

If spider veins are unsightly or uncomfortable, they can be treated with laser, or by injection of a solution whtat will cause them to disappear or become much smaller. There is about a 50-90 percent chance for a greatly improved appearance.

The cause of spider veins is not completely known. In many cases they seem to run in families. Identical twins can be affected in the same area of the body and to the same extent. The condition reraly occurs as part of an internal disease.
Spider veins appear in both men and women, but more frequently in women. The female hormones may play a role in their development. Puberty, birth control pills, pregnancy, or hormone replavement therapy often seem to bring them out. They may also appear after an injury, or as a result of wearing tight girdles, or form hosiery held up with tight rubber bands. Spider veins may also occur in association with large varicose veins.
Spider veins on the nose or the cheeks of fair skinned persons may be related to sun exposure.

The injection method, a procedure called sclerotherapy is used to treat unwanted blood vessels. One of several kinds of solutions, called sclerosing solution, is injected with a very fine needle directly into the blood vessel. This procedure has been used for spider veins since the 1930’s and before that for larger veins. The solution irritates the lining of the vessel, causing it to swell, stick together and the blood to thicken. Over a period of weeks, the vessel turns in o scar tissue that is absorbed, eventually becoming barely noticeable or invisible.

A single blood vessel may have to be injected more than once, some weeks or months apart, depending on its size. In any one treatment session a number of vessels can be injected.

The solutions available are slightly different and the choice of which solution to use depends on several factors including the size of the vessel to be injected. Dr. Abrams, D.O, will choose the solution that is best for your particular case.
Occasionally larger varicose veins are underneath or associated with the spide weins. In such cases, some phusicians believe these vessels should be treated before the spider veins. This can be done by sclerotherapy, intevascular lase, or radio frequency, followed by compression.

After several treatments, most patients can expect a 50 percent to 90 percent improvement. However, fading is gradual, usually over months. Diappearance of spider veins is usually achieved, but similar veins may appear in the same general area.

Yes. All skin types and skin colors respond equally well.

Insurance rarely covers treatment of spider veins but may sometimes cover larger vein treatment. If the treatment is solely for cosmetic reasons, it may not be covered. Sometimes a second opinion, laboratory studies, or photographs are required by insurance companies before treatment is started to get the procedure covered for larger varicose veins.

Even with a highly experienced physician performing the treatment, there are some possible side effects. We recommend scheduling a consultation with Doctor Abrams prior to the treatment.

Larger veins may recur even after surgical procedures. Spider veins may also recur. It may seem that a preciously injected vessel has recurred, when in fact, a new spider vein has appeared in the same area.

Not necessarily, but the procedure must be done with caution to lessen the risk of blood clots.

Not necessarily, but the procedure must be done with caution to lessen the risk of blood clots.

Surgically tying veins off (ligation), or pulling them out (ambulatory phlebectomy), are other procedures for treating unwanted blod vessels. These methods are usually reserved for larger varicose veins.

Dr. Abrams recommend to bandage the injected areas and instruct patients to “compress” the treated vessels by wearing support host. This help seal the treated vessels, keep the blod form collecting under the skin, and reduce the development of dark pots. It also help reduce the number of treatments necessary, and the possibility of recurrence.
