BOTOX® Cosmetic, also known as onabotulinumtoxinA, is a prescription medicine that is injected into muscles and used to improve the look of moderate to severe frown lines. In 2002, BOTOX® was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of moderate to severe frown lines between the eye brows (glabellar lines).
Since the FDA approval, BOTOX® Cosmetic popularity has soared and is consistently one of the top five nonsurgical cosmetic procedures performed each year. BOTOX® is used to eradicate crow's feet, frown lines, and furrows in the forehead. BOTOX® is also approved for medical treatment such as severe armpit perspiration and migraine headaches.

BOTOX® Cosmetic vs. Dermal Fillers

BOTOX® is a toxin which blocks the release of a chemical called acetylcholine which triggers the muscle contractions that create wrinkle. BOTOX® paralyzes the muscles and stops them from contracting. Dermal fillers such as Juvederm®, Sculptra®  Aesthetic, Radiesse®, Restylane ® on the other hand are soft tissue fillers that add volume to skin depressions.
Results will show within one week after treatment and for a minimum of three months.

BOTOX® Cosmetic Procedure

Because BOTOX® Cosmetic is a prescription medicine, it must be injected with sterile instruments by a physician in a doctor's office. A minimal discomfort from the shot may occur but the procedure overall is painless. If you are extremely sensitive, you may ask for some local anesthesia or a numbing cream. The procedure takes anywhere from a few minutes to 20 minutes depending on the extent of the treatment.

Selecting the correct injection points is critical to the success of the procedure. The points are not necessarily at the wrinkle you are hoping to erase but where the muscle contracts. You can resume normal activities immediately but we recommend our patients to avoid the sun.

Alternative and Additional Treatments
Depending on your condition, our physician may elect an alternative treatment. We offer Dysport® which is an alternative to Botox®. In addition, if the wrinkles are too deep dermal fillers such as Juvederm®, Sculptra®  Aesthetic, Radiesse®, Restylane ® may be advised.

When correcting unwanted wrinkles, it is important to do monthly/quarterly maintenance to rebuild the collagen and elasticity of the skin such as skin rejuvenation procedures like the eMatrix treatment. In conjunction with BOTOX®, we recommend our patients to follow a certain skin care regimen to keep the skin looking young and healthy. We offer a large array of aesthetic procedures ranging from dermaplaning, microdermabrasion to chemical peels.

Botox® Side Effects
FDA states that cosmetic use of Botox appears to be safe. The most common side effects of Botox include headache, nausea, flu-like symptoms and redness and pain at the injection site. Infrequently, patient experience muscle weakness or drooping of the upper eyelid muscles. This side effect usually resolves within days.

Botox® Cost

When it comes to Botox and other injectable, you get what you pay for. Be aware; bargain Botox may increase your risk of complications, including poor cosmetic results. Some risks may be associated with the procedure and we advise our patients not to have this type of procedure performed at parties by your local nail salon, neighbor's living room or at the mall. Many types of physicians perform Botox injections, including board-certified plastic surgeons, dermatologists and facial plastic surgeons. Botox shots require a precise knowledge of facial anatomy. Your risk of complications increases when Botox injections are performed by unskilled injectors.

The cost for Botox starts at $30 for smoker’s line, chin, and bunny lines. The price for Crows feet, glabella (between brows) and the forehead areas vary starts at $120. We suggest scheduling a consultation with Dr. Abrams or our Nurse Practitioner to determine your needs. The low cost of the consultation will be deducted toward the cosmetic procedure of your choice.

Multiple areas may be treated at one time, and repeat treatments are need on average every three to four months.
